Dental Practice Ownership

Along with a decrease in the dental workforce, there is a decrease in the number of dental practices across the country.

According to the Health Policy Institute of the American Dental Association, private practice ownership went from 84.7 percent in 2005 down to 72.5 percent in 2023.

The report also found that female dentists are less likely than male dentists to own a practice. In 2005, 68.1 percent of practices were owned by a woman in the practice but in 2023, that number dropped to 59.9 percent. Meanwhile, 88.5 percent of practices were owned by a man in the practice in 2005. That number dropped to 79.9 percent in 2023.

In addition to gender, age appears to be a factor in dental practice ownership. The number of dentists under 30 buying a practice dropped from 25.4 percent in 2005 to 8.8 percent in 2023, while the number of practices owned by dentists between ages 45-64 only dropped about five percentage points.
